1,300 jailed for fines non-payment

first_imgNewsLocal News1,300 jailed for fines non-paymentBy admin – May 10, 2012 698 MORE than 1,300 people – many cash-strapped – were sent to Limerick Prison last year for failure to pay fines imposed for road traffic offences and non-payment of the TV licence fee. It has emerged that a growing number are contacting a local debt support organisation in fear their children will be put into care when a prison sentence is the only option open to them.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up Figures obtained by the Limerick Post show that 895 men and 448 women were sent to jail in 2011 for non-payment of fines imposed by the court,  mostly for offences such as speeding and road tax. And this figure may be even higher, as the Prison Service has yet to finalise information for 2011. A custodial sentence ranging from five days to a month, can be applied by court judges to those who default in payment of a fine. Prison Service sources confirmed that defaulters are usually processed and sent home the same day, but some do spend a night in custody. One Limerick man spent a day in a holding cell with six others who had defaulted on fines. The man – whose business collapsed in the recession  – said he simply didn’t have the €600 to pay a fine. The holding cell, he added, smelled of urine.“Of the seven of us, five were of unblemished character, without a single criminal conviction. And all were in custody because of the recession; we couldn’t pay court fines. Six were in for minor traffic offences”.Said Seamus Sherlock, founder of Life After Debt, the Limerick Organisation for people in financial trouble.“I have calls from people terrified about the prospect of prison. I try to tell them that it will more than likely be for a few hours, but all they can see is the word ‘prison,’ WhatsApp Previous article“I want to be the best in the World” Keith EarlsNext articleVaradkar gives ‘wings’ to Shannon Airport admin Facebook Twitter Linkedin Print “I had one from a woman who was petrified. She saw herself in jail, her children in care and her family home gone. She was frantic with no way of paying the fines, and no matter how I tried to convince her those things wouldn’t happen, she was still terrified”.Mr Sherlock says that something has to be done. “The judges hands are tied but it would be much better if people were to do community service. It would be productive, at least”. Solicitor, John Devane, said that the safest thing is not to keep people in prison unnecessarily for such minor matters because the prison is so run down. AFN Slams Six Months Ban on Gloria Asumnu

first_imgTeam Nigeria’s track and field sprinter, Gloria Asumnu, has been suspended from all International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) organised competitions for six months.A statement signed by the AFN’s Head of Communication and Media, Olukayode Thomas, said the board was left with no option than to suspend Asumnu because of her unruly behaviour during and after the last 14th IAAF World Championship in Athletics in Moscow, Russia .“It is unfortunate that even after she was cautioned by the disciplinary committee set up during the championship to investigate the initial allegations leveled against her, Asumnu appeared to have been unperturbed.“She further refused to participate in the 4x100m and even went ahead to make further uncomplimentary remarks on the social media. This contravenes the code of conduct and ethics of the federation and is totally unacceptable,” said Thomas.Consequently, the board decided that Asumnu be suspended from all AFN and IAAF organised activities for a period of six months effective from August 2013.Thomas said; “Asumnu is also required to formally tender appropriate apology to AFN for her unruly conduct before the expiration of this suspension.”The AFN board spokesman urged other athletes to learn from Asumnu’s mistake and be good ambassadors of the federation and Nigeria at all times as the board will not hesitate to sanction any unruly athletes.last_img read more

Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast — April 13, 2018

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest 180413_RyanMartinWarm air continues to surge north across the state today. Temperatures will be a good 10-15 degrees above normal, fueled by strong south winds averaging 15-30 mph. However, clouds will be on the increase today, as we get closer to moisture from our approaching frontal boundary. That moisture should hold off in most places until tomorrow.Significant rains are here for the weekend. Saturday and Sunday we have combined rain totals of .1”-2.5” with coverage at 90% of the state. To get into the upper part of the range, you will need to have a few stronger thunderstorms, and we think that the best shot at those will be in west central and NW Ohio. There is a fairly good strong to severe weather threat for late tomorrow afternoon and overnight, and a second chance late morning to midday on Sunday. Rains will come and go tomorrow, and we expect some significant holes in the coverage to be seen through mid-afternoon. But, then things fill in a lot more, the closer we get to the cold front itself. Behind the front, significantly colder air blasts in Sunday late afternoon and evening. In fact, we expect lingering moisture to change over to and end as some sloppy wet snow Sunday night, and we can’t rule out on and off wet snow for Monday. Strong northwest winds will be at 15-30 mph overnight Sunday night and Monday, and temps will be back to 10-12 degrees below normal at least, perhaps 15 degrees below normal in spots. The map above shows total precipitation through Monday morning. While clouds and cold air dominate Monday, we should see better chances for sunshine Tuesday, but it stays cool. The cool air holds through most of the rest of the week. AT midweek on Wednesday we have a light rain back in the forecast, with showers over northern Indiana that produce up to .25” of liquid. We do expect rain, not snow from this event. South of I-70, we see nothing, and may even see some sunshine. We are dry to finish the week.AT the end of the 10 day period, we have our next front arriving for the 22nd with rains of half to 1.25” For the extended 11-16 day window, we have 2 more systems, one on the 25th with .25”-1” rains, and finally, a strong low coming out of the plains for the 28th with .5”- 1” rains. Coverage from all three systems will be around 70% to 80% of the state. This forecast, as it currently sits, continues to have not quite enough dryness in-between systems to see significant field work through the end of April.last_img read more

But we have the opportunity in the next few months to show we are capable to be more competitive,” he said. The Argentine feels his team have progressed considerably from the May 2016 league game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in which they lost a 2-0 lead and drew 2-2, which handed the 2015-16 title to Leicester.”We were nice kids playing football, now we are more mature, more competitive,” he said. “We will see if that is enough to win titles. We grow a lot in the last five years and I think this game was important to learn a lot.” last_img read more
