Here’s why Kieran Trippier didn’t celebrate Harry Kane’s last-gasp winner

first_img It’s a good thing Trippier didn’t join his team-mates 2 Trippier had a superb game The Spurs man was the only absentee from the already-iconic pile-up by the corner flag because he was aware of a niche rule which could’ve spoiled everything. The laws of the game state that a team can restart the game once there are no opposition players in their half. This usually occurs as players reset for the kick-off but technically, England’s celebrations took place outside the Tunisian half. Kieran Trippier is more than just a quality wing-back.While his team-mates, and 70 million people back home, went berserk for Harry Kane’s dramatic late winner, Trippier kept his head. 2 If Trippier joined in, Jordan Pickford could’ve found himself with a ten-one-one situation before empty pint glasses even hit the floor.Another moment of class in what was an exceptional performance from Trippier.last_img read more

Zuma pays tribute to Van Zyl Slabbert

first_img17 May 2010President Jacob Zuma has joined thousands of mourners in expressing his condolences to the family of former South African opposition leader, political analyst and businessman Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert, who passed away on Friday.Van Zyl Slabbert died at the age of 70 after spending some time at a Johannesburg hospital.Zuma said Van Zyl Slabbert’s visionary leadership lived on in the government’s efforts to build and strengthen democracy in South Africa.“He will be remembered as a principled and patriotic South African who served his country diligently,” Zuma said.Van Zyl Slabbert, whose conventional Afrikaner upbringing did not prevent him from recognising the folly of the apartheid system, played a prominent role in the struggle against apartheid.A sociologist by training, his academic work brought him into contact with people of other races at the height of apartheid. This laid the seeds for his opposition to the system, Zuma said.As a Member of Parliament, Van Zyl Slabbert was an outspoken critic of minority rule.“He will be remembered in particular for his courage and foresight in leading a group of white South Africans to Dakar, Senegal in 1987 for talks with the ANC that proved a critical moment on the path towards a negotiated settlement.”Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Payal Tadvi suicide: Bombay HC to film bail plea hearing of 3 accused

first_imgThe Bombay High Court on Thursday directed its registry department to make arrangements to film the hearing of the bail pleas of three resident doctors, arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of their junior at a civic-run hospital in the city, on July 30.Justice D.S. Naidu was hearing bail pleas filed by Dr. Hema Ahuja, Dr. Bhakti Mehare and Dr. Ankita Khandelwal, who were arrested on May 29 for making casteist slurs against their junior Dr. Payal Tadvi, leading to her suicide.Tadvi (26), a second-year postgraduate medical student attached to BYL Nair Hospital, committed suicide in her hostel room on May 22.Justice Naidu on Thursday noted that Section 15 (a) (10) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) mandates that all proceedings under the act have to be video recorded by the court concerned. The provision was pointed out to the court by advocate Gunaratan Sadavarte, who appeared for the victim’s mother. While special public prosecutor Raja Thakare said it was a policy matter, advocate Aabad Ponda, appearing for the accused, said the provision is only for trial proceedings and not bail hearings. Justice Naidu, however, said that it would be implied for all judicial proceedings.“I cannot ignore the statutory provisions. While I am sympathetic towards the fact that this would mean a delay in hearing of the bail pleas, but it is also imperative that the provisions of the act are followed,” the judge said. The court then directed the high court’s registry department to make necessary arrangements for video-recording and posted the bail pleas for further hearing on July 30.Justice Naidu said as a judge, he was known for recording court proceedings that he uses his mobile phone to record audios of arguments of lawyers in important cases. Mr. Ponda, while seeking bail, argued that the accused are educated persons and not criminals.“We are not criminals. We know that something unfortunate has happened and a woman has lost her life. But life has to go on. We will face the trial,” Ponda said. The accused have been suspended from the Nair hospital, he said, adding they just want to complete their education and propose to stay out of Mumbai.Mr. Ponda further pointed out that the chargesheet filed by the prosecution places reliance on the purported suicide note, the photos of which were recovered from Tadvi’s mobile.“The suicide note speaks about harassment meted out with regard to work. There is no whisper about caste or that the accused persons made remarks about the victim’s caste,” Mr. Ponda argued. The three doctors have been booked under IPC sections for abetment of suicide and destruction of evidence, and provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities). They are presently in judicial custody.Tadvi’s family alleged that three of her seniors – Ahuja, Meher and Khandelwal – ragged her and hurled casteist abuses at her, forcing Tadvi to take her life. Mumbai police’s Crime Branch on Tuesday filed a chargesheet against the three accused. The over 1,800-page charge sheet, filed before a special court here, contains a copy of the three-page suicide note allegedly written by Tadvi before hanging herself in her hostel room.last_img read more

Yuzvendra Chahal to be India’s new No.3 during New Zealand T20s, jokes Rohit Sharma

first_imgYuzvendra Chahal was India’s top scorer with 18 not out when India collapsed to their lowest ever ODI total in New Zealand in the fourth match of the series in Hamilton earlier this week. India had suffered an 8-wicket defeat in the fourth ODI.While 5 of India’s top 6 batsmen failed to get into double digits, No.10 Chahal showcased his batting talent hitting three boundaries in his unbeaten 37-ball knock. Chahal had also joined forces with fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav to stitch a 25-run stand for the 9th wicket, which was also the highest partnership in the match for India. However, the impact of top order’s rare failure was such that India never recovered and were bundled out for just 92.In a light-hearted conversation on the Chahal TV, the anchor — Yuzvendra Chahal — caught up with stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma after India’s 4-1 ODI series victory over New Zealand in Wellington on Sunday.Chahal asked Rohit if he can be promoted to bat at No.3 in Virat Kohli’s absence during the three-match Twenty20 International series against New Zealand starting February 6.Rohit’s reply was classic.”He [Chahal] was our top scorer in the previous match that we lost. But I want you to be the top scorer in a match which go on to win. I will speak to Ravi Bhai for your promotion to No.3 in the T20s,” Rohit jokingly said.WATCH: Hitman @ImRo45’s guest appearance on Chahal TVWhy does Rohit want to give @yuzi_chahal a batting promotion? – by @RajalAroraFind out here (@BCCI) February 3, 2019Rohit was, however, all praise for India’s all round effort in the series that gave them their only second bilateral ODI series victory in New Zealand.”Beating New Zealand in New Zealand has never been easy for any team. Even when we won in 2009, it was not an easy series. They had a strong team then and they play very well at home. The way they have been playing cricket for the last two years, it was never going to be easy for us. But all our boys played well,” he said.Rohit also lauded top-scorer Ambati Rayudu, who scored 90, and the middle order for their contribution in the game.”Even today, it was a perfect match for us. We were 20 for 4. But Ambati Rayudu and Vijay Shankar were fantastic. Rayudu’s knock was very crucial for his own confidence and also for the team. The way Hardik and Kedar finished the game was also very important otherwise we wouldn’t have reached 250,” Rohit said. Also Read | ICC’s advice: Never leave your crease with MS Dhoni behind the stumpsAlso Read | Virat Kohli must get credit for setting high standards for Team India: Harbhajan SinghAlso Read | How’s the Josh?
