Volleyball to face pair of Big Ten squads at home

first_imgJEFF SCHORFHEIDE/Herald photoWaging a border battle of their own, the Wisconsin volleyball team will host Minnesota and Iowa this weekend at the Field House for a pair of Big Ten matches. The Badgers lost to both the Gophers and the Hawkeyes earlier this season, but the team thinks the games were too far in the past to think about.“I don’t know if there is much we can draw from because that was the beginning of the season,” head coach Pete Waite said. “I think at Iowa we just did not play well, at all. I think we picked it up against Minnesota, but we still need to be more consistent throughout the length of the match.”UW split its matches last weekend, defeating Ohio State on the road but losing to Michigan in Ann Arbor. The team came away happy from the weekend, however, believing it played well enough to win against the Wolverines.“There have been matches we won where you might not win each category, but you win the right points at the right time,” Waite said. “We did feel we played well, but there were some times in the second and third sets when we were in extra points, and every little error causes you to lose a set like that.”“I think they just got runs of points on us, and we made our own mental errors,” outside hitter Brittney Dolgner added. “We tend to get down in the beginning, so I think that is a big factor. And then we have to fight back, which we are actually getting pretty good at. I think we just need to cut down on the mental errors.”Highlighting the Badgers’ solid performance was the play of freshman setter Janelle Gabrielsen. The jack of all trades freshman recorded a triple-double with 13 kills, 10 digs and 15 assists — the first at UW in 20 years. While Gabrielsen downplays the accomplishment, the rest of her teammates praised her for it.“That is awesome for a freshman,” Dolgner said. “I mean, that is awesome for anybody, but especially for a freshman. She is really modest about it … but it was really cool.”“You see, she doesn’t understand history,” Waite added. “The last time that happened was 1988. That is a long time. She wasn’t even born then.”Gabrielsen prefers to focus on the match ahead.“We had a really good practice today, and everybody is really pumped up for the two games this weekend,” Gabrielsen said.Though most of the Badgers enjoy the “border battle,” it may mean more to the team’s other setter: sophomore Nikki Klingsporn.“I think [the border battle] is more for Nikki [Klingsporn] because she is from Minnesota,” Dolgner said. “She always really wants to beat them, and she has a lot of friends from there who give her crap about Wisconsin. So it is nice to try and get a win for her.”Despite UW’s inconsistent and sometimes frustrating season, the Badgers are confident their talent is finally meshing enough to meet preseason expectations.“I just think we want to show people what we are made of and really go out strong,” Dolgner said. “We didn’t have a very good start, but now our team is flowing more, and we are just trying to get that bid to the NCAA tournament.”last_img read more

New Partnership: National Ski Academy and RED

first_imgWe are proud to announce that RED Mountain’s Legacy Training Centre has been designated The National Ski Academy’s ‘Official Western Canadian Training Centre’.  RED Mountain and Rossland are steeped in skiing history, tradition, and culture dating back to the late 1800’s. In 1968 RED hosted the first World Cup race ever held in Canada. The Red Mountain Racers and the Red Mountain Academy are one of the most successful alpine ski clubs in North America. Red Mountain Racers have won 2 Olympic Gold Medals, 1 Olympic Silver Medal, 2 World Cup Overall Titles, 27 World Cup Medals and 1 World Junior Championship Gold Medal. The history of racing at RED coupled with the NSA’s 30 years of developing the Ontario and National Team(s) ski racers made this partnership a natural fit. Nigel Cooper, Director of Operations, with the NSA stated, “The student athletes and staff at the National Ski Academy are excited and proud of our new and long-term partnership with RED Mountain. With a shared history of success in ski racing and educating student athletes, we are happy to go down this path for the next three years together.” Christine Andison, Director of the Red Mountain Academy, stated that “the opportunity to work closely with the National Ski Academy to enhance the athletic and academic programming for both Academies will result in a superior experience for athletes in both programs. This is a pivotal partnership and we are looking forward to a dynamic relationship which will benefit the sport of ski racing in Canada and beyond.” This year the National Ski Academy is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Jurg Gfeller, Executive Director, founding the NSA in Collingwood Ontario. Together we will continue the National Ski Academy’s mission to “provide an environment for talented student athletes to maximize individual potential through the pursuit of alpine ski racing excellence, academic achievement and personal growth.” Matt Henry, Director of The Legacy Training Centre also commented on the partnership. “We couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with the NSA. 2010 Human Development Index rankings

first_imgSouth Africa has improved its position on the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP’s) Human Development Index released today in New York. South Africa is considered a medium development country and was ranked 110 (out of 169) in the latest report. This was a marginal improvement from 129 (out of 189) year-on-year.The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic used to rank countries by level of “human development” and separates developed (high development), developing (middle development), and underdeveloped (low development) countries in three broad areas covering life expectancy, education and per-capita GDP (as an indicator of standard of living).“While Brand South Africa works to lift the profile of South Africa’s global competitiveness around the world, it is always mindful of the broader reputation drivers and the context these bring to a purely investment driven conversation by our stakeholders. Reports like the HDI are important in this light, not just because they inform reputation, but also because they inform perceptions of future investment potential for our country in terms of a healthy and educated work force capable of a high level of productivity,” said Brand South Africa CEO Miller Matola.South Africa’s overall HDI score experienced gradual improvements between 1990 and 2005. Since 2005, its overall score has remained stable and continues to trend in line with the global average. “South Africa ranks eighth out of the broader Sub-Saharan region, behind that of Tunisia, Libya, Botswana, Algeria, Gabon and Namibia. However, South Africa performs well in the region when assessing the levels of multidimensional poverty, where it is scored the best,” he said.Multidimensional poverty is a measure of serious deprivations in the dimensions of health, education and living standards that combines the number of deprived with the intensity of their deprivation. In Sub-Saharan Africa South Africa has 3% of its population living in some form of deprivational poverty relative to a country like Niger which has 93%.Among emerging markets which make up the BRIC structures, South Africa performed ahead of India (ranked 119) and behind Brazil (73), Russia (65) and China (89).  “It is important to contextualize South Africa’s development alongside other emerging markets to ensure that not only our economic growth but our people dimensions are enhanced at a similar rate to other comparable nations,” said Miller Matola. Endslast_img read more

Who Can You Learn From?

first_imgMy teenage son asked me who my heroes were when I was his age. I struggled to come up with any names. I never really had any heroes, and I still don’t. But I do have a list of people who have shaped my thinking and my work.In 1995, I read Howard Bloom’s book The Lucifer Principle: A Scientific Journey Into the Forces of History. I wanted to understand memetics (memes, long before the word meme meant something gone viral on the Internet). So I emailed Bloom. He added me to a newsgroup that he was part of, and I dove in and started reading.Whenever I am in Brooklyn, I try to meet with Howard and buy him dinner or join him on his daily walk through the park, a walk that always entails stopping to interact with every canine between his flat and whatever coffee shop he will be working from. Howard’s work has had a tremendous influence on my work and my thinking.A few years later, I wanted to learn about John Boyd’s work, particularly OODA loops. Colonel Boyd had passed away long before I became familiar with his work. But in my studies, I came across the work of Chet Richards, one of the key people with whom Boyd worked. Chet had written a book called Certain to Win, in which he masterfully applied John Boyd’s work to business strategy.I emailed Chet, met him in Atlanta, bought him lunch (and maybe a couple nice beers), and he helped me to understand OODA Loops. Boyd and Richards both helped me think about strategy.I read every book and every blog post that Tom Peters has written. Tom was the first person to write about the importance of people in a business. And he doesn’t mince words about the obligation of leaders to empower their people; he really, really means it. Nor does he pull any punches when he speaks about the individual’s obligation to do their best work.Tom’s work helped me understand what business can—and should—be. I spent an hour on the phone with Tom interviewing him for this blog. I may not have any heroes, but I was thrilled beyond measure.Right now, I am studying everything Ken Wilber has written (which is a massive undertaking by itself). I am also listening to dozens of audio recordings to strengthen my understanding of his theories and their application to individuals and organizations (myself included). Wilber’s work provides a massive and complete framework for how people evolve and change, individually and in groups.I was fortunate enough to spend a few hours with Ken, and I have pages of notes. I’m working on the application of those ideas now.I am still a student. I still seek understanding. I still seek growth. I look for people who have something that I want to learn. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee calls defectors ‘greedy and corrupt’

first_imgWest Bengal Chief Minister and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday came down heavily on TMC leaders who joined the BJP post the Lok Sabha elections. She called them “greedy and corrupt” and said the saffron party was “collecting garbage”.The TMC chief also said she would be replacing the “traitors” with “dedicated members” and asked those “undecided about joining the BJP” to leave her Party at the earliest.Ms. Banerjee’s remarks came against the backdrop of three MLAs and a majority of councillors from five municipalities in the State defecting to the BJP from the TMC since the declaration of general election results last month.“We are not bothered about a few corrupt and greedy leaders who are switching to some other Party. They joined the BJP as they were afraid they might face consequences for their activities,” the Chief Minister said. She said her administration is contemplating action against those involved in corruption.“We are throwing out our garbage and the BJP is collecting it. But joining some other Party won’t save anyone from corruption probe,” Ms. Banerjee said at an internal meeting of Party councillors from across the State. The TMC president said she would want to restructure her Party ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, while insisting that those who were in two minds about switching to the BJP should leave immediately.“I would like to urge those traitors who are still undecided on whether to join the BJP or stay in the TMC to leave the Party. We don’t want such leaders and workers,” Ms. Banerjee said.“One person will leave and 500 more will be inducted in his or her place. We want to restructure our Party and replace corrupt and greedy workers with dedicated cadres,” she added.Admitting that her Party’s leadership made a few mistakes while dealing with old-timers and loyalists, the Chief Minister assured that the lapses would be taken care of. Referring to legislator Sunil Singh, who joined the BJP on Monday, Ms. Banerjee said it was a misjudgement on the part of the TMC to have given him a ticket for Noapara Assembly bypoll last year, overlooking the candidature of Manju Basu, wife of slain TMC leader Bikash Basu. She also instructed her Party leaders and workers to increase their outreach activities.Ms. Banerjee warned Party members against infighting as it “affects the implementation of government schemes”.“Work hard and work honestly to reach out to the masses. Don’t fall into the BJP’s trap. People are looking at us. Do remember that councillors play a very important role, they are the face of the Party in their respective wards,” she said.last_img read more

Man City team news & likely line-up

first_imgAfter sweeping past Oxford United 3-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, it is back to Premier League business for Manchester City at the weekend.Having dropped only two points this season, they could expect to be at the summit of the standings but find themselves playing catch up to Liverpool. With the Reds facing Chelsea later in the day, though, Pep Guardiola’s men can regain their habitual place in first at least temporarily by beating Brighton. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! MAN CITY INJURIES Benjamin Mendy remains doubtful for Manchester City’s clash with Brighton on Saturday. The left-back is suffering from a bruised metatarsal, and while City claim the injury is not serious there has been no specific timeframe put on his recovery.Mendy is a doubt for the game, although there is a hint of mystery surrounding the situation given Pep Guardiola had initially claimed it was his knee that was injured.Kevin De Bruyne will definitely miss out, however, and is not expected to be back until after the international break at the end of October.Claudio Bravo will be out until next year with an Achilles injury.Pep Guardiola Benjamin MendyMAN CITY SUSPENSIONS Neither side have any suspensions.MAN CITY POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UP Mendy’s injury has seen City go back to a 4-3-3 formation in recent weeks, and that could well be the case again on Saturday if the Frenchman is out.Fabian Delph is most likely to step in if Mendy does not make it – the England international was rested for the midweek Carabao Cup win at Oxford.Aymeric Laporte has been an ever-present in the Premier League this season and that run is likely to continue. His partner has often changed but John Stones could get the nod here given City could need his ability to play out from the back against defensive opposition.Fernandinho could be rested ahead of a big Champions League game on Tuesday, though Guardiola has been reluctant to use Ilkay Gundogan at the back of midfield unless the Brazilian has been injured or suspended. Stones played the role in midweek though it remains to be seen whether he would be trusted to have another go in the league.Bernardo Silva has looked at his best in the middle of midfield this season, and while 18-year-old Phil Foden did plenty to further his case for first-team action in the Carabao Cup, it would still be a surprise if he starts in the Premier League just yet.If Mendy misses out then Leroy Sane could start on the left of the attack, as he did at Cardiff last weekend.Sergio Aguero has had to get used to battling for the central striking role with Gabriel Jesus in recent months but at the moment the Argentine certainly appears to have the edge when Guardiola only picks one striker.Manchester City XIBRIGHTON TEAM NEWS The biggest concern for Seagulls boss Chris Hughton will be the fitness of Pascal Gross. Gross sustained an ankle injury against Fulham at the start of September and has been out of action since.Jose Izquierdo and Dale Stephens are also doubts.Brighton have won just one game this season and have lost three and drawn two since then.OPTA MATCH FACTS Manchester City won both Premier League clashes with Brighton last term, scoring five goals in the process – they have never won three in a row against the Seagulls in the top four tiers of English football. Brighton have never won an away game against Man City in all competitions, losing six of their eight visits (D2). Manchester City have won 58 of a possible 63 points from their last 21 Premier League home games (W19 D1 L1). Brighton have won just two of their last 15 Premier League games, with both of those coming against Manchester United (D5 L8). Away from home, Brighton are winless in 16 Premier League games (D5 L11), scoring just seven goals in that run. Since the start of last season, there have been 20 instances of a team scoring 5+ goals in a Premier League match – Manchester City have been responsible for eight of those (40%). Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has been directly involved in 17 goals in his last 10 Premier League games at the Etihad (14 goals, 3 assists). TV COVERAGE & KICK-OFF TIME Kick off is 15:00 GMT (10:00 ET) but the game will not be shown on TV in the United Kingdom.
