4-H grant

first_imgRock Eagle 4-H Center has received a $3,443 grant from the Milledgeville Chapter of the Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board of Trustee for the addition of two new outbuildings at the Scott Site, Rock Eagle’s pioneer home site. The site is used for teaching living history classes and is visited by thousands of students each year. The Georgia 4-H Environmental Education Program began at Rock Eagle in 1979 and was later expanded to include four other 4-H centers. The five centers currently serve more than 40,000 students annually, making it the largest residential program of its kind in the nation. The program has been designated a state and national learning model, drawing students and teachers from more than 500 schools representing six southeastern states.Over the past decade, the center and the foundation board of trustees have partnered on multiple projects at the Scott Site. Past projects include the restoration of a pioneer house and the installation of a well and hand pump. The new project will include the construction of a privy and a fully functioning smokehouse, two structures that were essential to life on the farm during Georgia’s pioneer days. “We appreciate the Watson- – Brown Foundation’s continued support in helping Rock Eagle 4-H Center provide a historic perspective of early American farm life. This funding allows students the chance to gain a better understanding of life in the rural South” said State 4-H leader Arch Smith. The Watson-Brown Foundation supports historic preservation in part through its junior board of trustees, a talented group of local high school students whose exclusive mission is to preserve local history. Part historic preservation, part youth philanthropy, this educational initiative fosters civic responsibility, heightens an appreciation for local history, and introduces students to disciplined and thoughtful giving.last_img read more

Woman traumatized after trapped in tipped over porta-potty

first_imgA Canadian woman says she is traumatized after being trapped in a porta-potty that tipped over.Cecilia Mwalyoga, her boyfriend and their five-week-old daughter went to the Wings Over Springbank Airshow on July 27th.But once they arrived the show was canceled due to intense winds.Mwalyoga opted to use a portable restroom before leaving the area. However, things literally took a turn for the worst when intense winds tipped the porta-potty over while she was inside. When the porta-potty hit the ground, she was still trapped inside. The woman’s boyfriend scrambled to hoist the porta-potty up enough for Mwayloga to crawl out of a small hole.Mwayloga was covered in toilet paper, blue water toilet water, urine, and even found needles in her hair.Besides feeling humiliated, she was worried about potential injuries and questioned the safety of the portable restrooms which she said were not “anchored” down.Mwayloga said she took a two-hour shower after the ordeal and is still traumatized.Click here to learn more.last_img read more

The Dark Side of Dark Matter Hunts

first_imgDark matter is still a no-show. What will it take for cosmologists to give up on a fruitless quest?Chalk up another failure; one of the candidates for dark matter, the axion, did not turn up in the latest sensitive search. For years, most hunts have focused on WIMPs or MACHOs, but those continually failed. Phys.org reports, “Dark matter experiment finds no evidence of axions.”Physicists from MIT and elsewhere have performed the first run of a new experiment to detect axions—hypothetical particles that are predicted to be among the lightest particles in the universe. If they exist, axions would be virtually invisible, yet inescapable; they could make up nearly 85 percent of the mass of the universe, in the form of dark matter.Kitt Peak Mayall Telescope, c. David CoppedgeOne of the problems with this candidate is that axions are just as hypothetical as dark matter itself. This means that physicists are looking for one ghost to explain another ghost. While they are thought to be everywhere, axions are predicted to be virtually ghost-like, having only tiny interactions with anything else in the universe.“As dark matter, they shouldn’t affect your everyday life,” Winslow says. “But they’re thought to affect things on a cosmological level, like the expansion of the universe and the formation of galaxies we see in the night sky.”In short, cosmologists need the ghosts to keep their theory from failing. But is dark matter even needed?Unusual galaxies defy dark matter theory (Phys.org). A team from the Keck Observatory found a galaxy without dark matter:After drawing both praise and skepticism, the team of astronomers who discovered NGC 1052-DF2 – the very first known galaxy to contain little to no dark matter – are back with stronger evidence about its bizarre nature.Oddly, the team is claiming that the non-discovery of dark matter in this bizarre galaxy is actually evidence for dark matter. The idea is that regular matter and dark matter act independently, so it should be possible to find them with separate means. This is like saying that since they didn’t find ghosts in the living room, it may still be possible to find them hiding in the bedroom.Physicists constrain dark matter (Phys.org). The Russians are in collusion with this conspiracy to find dark matter. Sometimes they use misinformation to claim victory: saying they have “constrained” dark matter actually means they found where it isn’t. Their next hoped-for candidate particle would be 28 orders of magnitude lighter than an electron! That is so tiny and difficult to detect—even if it exists—that legitimate objections could be lodged against any claimed detection about low signal-to-noise, or measurements contaminated by theory. On the other hand, maybe dark matter is 40 orders of magnitude heavier, they say. While speculating on ghosts, might as well have some fun!Lemmings, by JB Greene. Used by permission.Back to Evidence and SenseAstrophysicist Sabine Hossenfelder brings a breath of fresh air to cosmology’s obsession with unobservable phantoms. In her blog BackReaction for March 14, 2019, she mocks, “Particle physicists excited over discovery of nothing in particular.” Incredulous that her colleagues in physics are excited about their failures, she says,The logic here seems to be this: First, mass-produce empty predictions to raise the impression that a costly experiment will answer some big questions. Then, if the experiment fails to answer those questions, proclaim how exciting it is that your predictions were wrong. Finally, explain that you need money for a larger experiment to answer those big questions. The most remarkable thing about this is that they actually seem to think this will work.Needless to say, if the analysis of the recent data reveals a signal of new effects, then the next collider will be built for sure. If nothing new shows up, then particle physicists can either continue to excitedly deny anything went wrong, or realize they have to act against hype and group-think in their community.Just because some particle discoveries were predicted, such as the Higgs boson, that does not mean that every prediction will be confirmed, Hossenfelder reasons. However, the predictions for new particles besides the Higgs were all wrong. And now, rather than owning up to their mistakes, particle physicists want you to think it’s exciting they have found neither dark matter, nor extra dimensions, nor supersymmetry, nor anything else that is not in the standard model. For Relief from Headache, Bang Head HereMeanwhile, big-bang cosmologists have pushed the lumpiness problem into a new contortion. Space.com announced, “Universe Quickly Spawned Stars After Big Bang, Ancient Galaxy Shows.” The galaxy is said to have formed a mere 500 million Darwin Years after the big bang. And it already had oxygen (a heavy element, for astronomers), implying that its stars had already matured and gone supernova. At the rate they are discovering early galaxies, they will find instant galaxies popping into existence right after the bang itself.Might as well read Genesis 1 now and get ahead of their game. The dark side of dark matter hunts, as alluded in our headline, is that scientists are lying to the public about the solidity of the “standard model” because they are engaged in groupthink. Big Changes at Twitterfeed; Real-Time Publishing Rolling Out Now

first_imgmarshall kirkpatrick 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Real-Time Web#web Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting What does your blog have in common with CNN, the Wall St. Journal and the White House? You probably publish your updates to Twitter using Twitterfeed, just like those organizations do. Starting today if you publish on Blogger, Typepad or another publishing system that offers PubSubHubbub feeds Twitterfeed will subscribe and push your new posts to Twitter in a matter of moments. That’s not the only change going live, either. Publishing to Facebook? Check. An improved queue management system for greater reliability? Check. Integration with Google Analytics? Check!Earlier this afternoon Twitterfeed launched a new version of the service used by nearly 350,000 publishers. We caught up with the company at today’s ReadWrite Real-Time Web Summit and got the low-down on the changes rolling out to all users over the next few days.Twitterfeed believes it will now be the biggest subscriber to PubSubHubbub feeds and aims to test the system’s latency performance. No more 20 to 30 minute delays in publishing to Twitter if you’re on a Pubsubhubbub-enabled publishing system.Publishing to Facebook will be a huge win for many of those publishers and integration with both Bit.ly and Google Analytics through the integration of UTM tags will allow publishers to compare audience response in Facebook and Twitter (among other things). Real-time, cross-network publishing and analytics as a service? That’s pretty hot. With almost 350,000 publishers, Twitterfeed is approaching the number of publishers that FeedBurner had (430,000) when it was acquired by Google for a rumored $100 million. Like FeedBurner for the real-time web? That and more is what Twitterfeed could become if these kinds of technical developements could succeed.center_img Related Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

Apple Slams The Door On Super Mario

first_imgRole of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Tags:#app developers#Apple#iPhone Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces nick statt ReadWrite has confirmed that the GBA4iOS app will not download to a new device. MacBuildServer apparently builds the app and attempts to install it, but then an error screen pops up stating that the iPhone is “unable to download application.” That’s presumably because Apple either voided the certificate used to sign off on the app or limited it so it’s not authorized to distribute apps from third parties. The Story So FarTo recap, MacBuildServer was being used as both a stand in for Apple’s Xcode compiler and as the official account holder for installing the GBA4iOS app. To install the app, all anyone needed was to click “Install” on the app creator’s Github page. That would take them to MacBuildServer, which would build the app using the freely available code, sign off on it with its own enterprise developer certificate and install the app—no jailbreak required. That whole setup was clearly living on borrowed time, of course. MacBuildServer’s decision to open up its certificate to any and all users was a clear violation of Apple’s terms of service for enterprise developer accounts.Surprisingly, though, Apple seems to have taken a rather reserved approach here. For instance, it could have changed the entire structure of its enterprise developer program to disallow mass test-app installations. (And it still might, of course.)The Emulator LivesThose late to the party still have another way to get the GBA4iOS app, though it’s neither cheap nor easy. All a user needs to download the emulator is his or her own developer account, which costs as little as $99 a year and grants a certificate to install non-App Store apps. What’s still not entirely clear is whether MacBuildServer will still build the GBA4iOS app for users with a developer account. Our experience so far suggests that it will, and MacBuildServer’s announcement at least sounds encouraging on that front:But don’t leave a hope!Updates are coming and we will return white magic soon! We’re working on launching a lot of new features for developers to turn MacBuildServer into casual continuous delivery tool to help them launch great apps faster. What to do right now? Maybe, it’s time to enroll in Apple developer program for $99/year to continue using our service and try new features of iOS 7 without any limitations?I pinged the company directly on whether it will continue to compile the app for registered developers, and I’ll update if I hear back from them.If MacBuildServer is out of the game, then users will need to compile the app themselves using Apple’s Xcode development environment. That’s a slightly more complicated process, and it still requires the user to have a developer account in order to actually install the resulting app on a non-jailbroken device.   Related Posts Apple has closed the loophole in its iOS Developer Enterprise Program that let MacBuildServer, a company that assists mobile developers, build and install an unofficial app that allows people to play Nintendo games on their iGadgets.See also: Super Mario Zips Through A Loophole In Apple’s App RestrictionsTechnically, the app emulates a Game Boy Advance. Asian Games 2018: PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal assure India of historic medals

first_imgPV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal both won their respective quarter-finals to assure medals in singles badminton event at the Asian Games in Jakarta on Sunday.World number three PV Sindhu assured herself of at least a bronze medal with a 21-11, 16-21, 21-14 win over Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand.Saina Nehwal on the other hand defeated former world champion Ratchanok Inthanon 21-18 21-16 in a 42-minute quarterfinal.ASIAN GAMES, DAY 8 : LIVE UPDATESIndia will return with two badminton singles medals from Asian Games for the first time. The last Indian to return with an individual medal from the Asian Games was legendary Syed Modi, who won bronze in 1982 in Delhi.India have won seven other badminton medals at the Asian Games, with six of them coming in team events and one in men’s doubles.Interestingly, Saina and Sindhu had clashed at the finals of the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast in April with the former emerging victories.Talking about the second-game lapse, Sindhu said she was nervous and made easy errors.”I felt I could have finished it in two sets but I made easy errors and then I got nervous, my stroke were not coming in the second game. Due to my mistakes, I gave her the second set. I should not think that if first game is easy, second will also be easy,” she said. While Sindhu ran away with the first game, Jindapol made it little tough for the Indian in the second game and thrice held the lead.advertisementTrailing 13-16, Sindhu found winners on either side of the court to make it even but Jindapol again created a four-point lead with very calculated smash shots and won the game easily to roar back into the contest. In the decider, Sindhu trailed 4-7 with Jindapol spraying winners but the Indian won seven points in a row to give herself a four-point cushion. There was no change in script after that as Sindhu ran away with the match. Saina fell behind 3-8 at the beginning but found a way to beat the Thai player, whom she had beaten at the recent World Championship in Nanjing and also at the Indonesian Master at the same venue.Saina said she was not aware who won the last individual medal.”We were actually discussing that. We did not know. Gopi sir said keep the phone away,” said the world no 10 Indian. She came into this match with a superior record with four wins in the last five meetings against the Thai.”She was playing strong and I knew she will challenge me today. I was taking her seriously, she had beaten Sung Ji Hyun in the previous match and first time I saw her playing well against a rally player,” Saina said.Talking about her tactics after falling behind in the opening game, Saina said, “I was not moving that well initially but after 12-3 I opened up and I started picking up those tough shots.”Then one-two rallies happened and there I saw her getting tired but she was very tough. She was playing attacking.”Saina said the deafening cheers of the crowd also made it challenging for her.”She had the lead, I had the good record against her, crowd was shouting (for Indonesian player on adjacent court), so many things were playing in my mind. You could not hear the shuttle (due to noise), you have to be alert.” The London Olympics bronze medallist Indian will next take on Tai Tzu Ying, who knocked out 2017 World Champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-15 21-10 in another quarterfinal.Though Saina looked in good nick and rhythm, unforced errors pegged her back 1-5 and 3-8 at one stage. With handy lead in pocket, Ratchanok tried to be deceptive with service but lost points. However, Saina again netted the shuttle to trail 3-9.The Indian had no option but to play aggressive and that too resulted in unforced errors, taking the first break trailing 3-11.Ratchanok used the drop shots quite effectively on Saina’s backhand side. As Saina had to stretch to reach to the shuttle, Rathanok found easy winners on her weak returns.Saina, though found the way to make a comeback and negated the strategy by hitting deep and angled returns, reducing the deficit to 15-17.(With inputs from PTI)last_img read more
