Wellington girls upset Winfield; boys lose by 19

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls basketball team pulled off one of its biggest wins of recent years with a 54-45 victory over Winfield. The varsity boys were not as fortunate losing 55-36 in Winfield Friday night.The Wellington girls battled a very good Lady Viking team, which came into the game 6-2 with its only losses coming to Buhler and McPherson. With the Bullpups, Winfield lost by a mere 2 points.But on Friday, Wellington’s Carlie McComb scored 17 points to lead the Crusaders to what was considered an upset win. Winfield opened with a 15-10 lead in the first quarter. But the Lady Dukes held the Vikes to just 4 points in the second quarter and  trailed 19-18 at the half.In the third quarter, Jaedyn Ledesma hit a jumper in the lane at the 5:09 mark and Wellington led 26-25. The Crusaders would never trail again.In the fourth quarter, Winfield was fouling in order to stop the clock. Free throws by McComb, Tayland French, Mireia Salvador, Kelsey Whaley kept Wellington in the lead.With a 10 point lead at 42 seconds remaining in the game, McComb knocked down two free throws to clinch the victory.Wellington is 6-3 and has a week off before playing Monday, Jan. 27 in the Mulvane Classic.Other scorers for Wellington were: Salvador 11, Snipes 9, French 4, Whaley 4, Holly Wright 2 and Zimmerman 2.In the boys game, Wellington had no answers for Will Adler who had a double-double with 26 points, 15 rebounds and four assists.Winfield opened with a 20-5 first quarter lead, but Wellington came back with a 14-4 output in the second quarter to pull with five, 24-19 at the half.Winfield then rolled Wellington in the second half outscoring the Gentlemen Dukes 13-7 and 18-10 for the 55-36 win. Connor Phelps led Wellington with 15 points. Other scorers include: Gilmore 3, Reichenberger 5, Baker 1, Nance 6, and Daugherty 6.Wellington will travel to the Chaparral Tournament on Thursday.The Wellington junior varsity lost 57-52.
