THUNDER ROAD STAKES QUOTES-SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2019

first_imgJOCKEY QUOTESANDREA ATZENI, TRUE VALOUR, ITALIAN-BORN JOCKEY WINNING HIS FIRST-EVER RACE AT SANTA ANITA. ATZENI IS TAKING A BREAK FROM RIDING IN THE U.K. DURING THEIR SLOWER MONTHS TO EXPERIENCE RACING IN THE U.S.:  “I put him in the race too early, he hadn’t run in quite a bit of time so the horse was a little bit fresh and probably got a little bit tired, but today it was keen to speaking to Simon earlier and give him a bit more time through the race and come around late around the outside.“The win was always going to happen, these things just take time. I’m having a great time here in America. I was going to go back three weeks ago, but I changed my flight to the end of February. This is a good place to be, keeping myself fit with the rides and the people have all been really great to me. Hopefully, I come back here.“True Valour ran well in his last race, maybe a bit too close to the pace is all. Today, I wanted to give him a chance, keep him to the outside. He jumped ok but I didn’t want to be too close to the pace. Obviously I was keeping an eye on Flavien, on River Boyne, obviously the horse to beat. He picked up when I picked my stick up and was always good enough to win. It went similar to the races I ride in the U.K.“I’ve had a great time so far, I’ve been placed a lot of times, I just couldn’t manage to get a win in, it was great to get a win today especially for Simon, he’s been very supportive to me and Sheikh Fahad who is not here today, he’s a good friend of mine and of course Matt Nakatani, my agent. He’s been good to me and it’s so great to get a winner. The horse deserves this because he was a pretty good horse in Europe and he was entitled to a win.” FLAVIEN PRAT, RIVER BOYNE, WHEN ASKED IF HE CONSIDERED CLAIMING FOUL FOR INTERFERENCE IN DEEP STRETCH:  “I was going for a hole and it closed right away.  I probably should’ve stayed on the fence.”TRAINER QUOTES SIMON CALLAGHAN, TRUE VALOUR, WINNER: “We knew there wasn’t probably not going to be that much speed on, but we had to stick to the plan take our time get him to relax and I just said to Andrea I prefer you to come in late than too early and we held Flavien in in a crucial time and he rode an absolutely perfect race.(On his Las Virgenes win with, Bellafina) “I think the main track was a little bit sticky today, and Mother Mother never gave us a break the whole way, so I think it was a good performance obviously when you come off such a scintillating win by a length, many people are disappointed, but we are happy to get the win and we’re going to freshen her up for the Santa Anita Oaks.”NOTES: The winning owner is Qatar Racing, Ltd.last_img read more

Five things Mourinho will do at Spurs – but there will be casualties

first_imgTRANSITION IS KEYMourinho has never hidden his belief that possession for the sake of possession is worthless. What matters is what you do with the ball when you get to it.He is not a high press manager and never has been. But a low defensive “block”, encouraging opponents to come on to him, allows his side to spring into the spaces on the counter.Pace out wide is key to that, and a centre-forward who can hold the ball up and get in where it matters. You suspect Harry Kane might like the sound of that.Mourinho’s first ten games at SpursNov 23 – West Ham (A)Nov 26 – Olympiakos (H)Nov 30 – Bournemouth (H)Dec 4 – Man Utd (A)Dec 7 – Burnley (H)Dec 11 – Bayern Munich (A)Dec 15 – Wolves (A)Dec 22 – Chelsea (H)Dec 26 – Brighton (H)Dec 28 – Norwich (A)PLAY THE FANSMourinho knows he has to win over the Tottenham faithful, many of whom will be pining for Maurico Pochettino. But he also knows, better than anyone, how to get them onside. That was why his initial club interview was all about “passion”.He will want to show he is now Spurs to his inner essence.Expect the full passion play on the sidelines, raging at every decision, demonstrating his affection for the players if they do well, showing it means as much to him as the supporters.A tear-up in the East End is a pretty good place to start because the travelling fans are always the most committed.4OUTSIDERS OSTRACISEDIt is harsh but with Mourinho there will always be casualties of war.If he takes against a player, it is a long time, if ever, before they are reintegrated. That is not impossible – see the way he treated Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku when he had them at United compared to first time round at Chelsea – but it can become pretty tough.Mourinho may feel he has to make an example of some players to prove he is the man in charge and has the full confidence of Daniel Levy.MOST READ IN FOOTBALLTHROUGH ITRobbie Keane reveals Claudine’s father was ’50-50′ in coronavirus battleTOP SELLERGavin Whelan has gone from League of Ireland to David Beckham’s InstagramExclusiveRIYAD RAIDMan City’s Riyad Mahrez has three luxury watches stolen in £500,000 raidPicturedAN EYEFULMeet Playboy model and football agent Anamaria Prodan bidding to buy her own clubI SAW ROORodallega saw Rooney ‘drinking like madman’ & Gerrard ‘on bar dancing shirtless’NEXT STEPJonny Hayes set to move to English Championship having been let go by CelticREF RELEASEDChampions League ref Vincic released by cops after arrest in prostitution raidKEANE DEALEx Man United youth ace David Jones says Roy Keane negotiated a contract for himChristian Eriksen may well be wondering if he will kick a ball for Spurs in a match that matters ever again. It may be that the Dane is seen as the most expendable, especially given he is running his contract down. But as Kevin de Bruyne, Paul Pogba and others could tell him, Mourinho does not believe in taking prisoners.4Jose Mourinho meets Son and Tottenham players in first training session at the club JOSE MOURINHO was charm personified at his Spurs unveiling on Thursday.Smiling widely, shaking hands, looking for all the world like a man in his element.4 Jose Mourinho was all smiles as he greeted the media during his first press conference as Spurs managerCredit: PA:Press AssociationLeopards, though, rarely change their spots and as Mourinho pointed out in a clear message: “I cannot change my DNA.”So what can Spurs fans expect to see from Mauricio Pochettino’s successor?SunSport picks out five things that are likely to emerge very quickly.SORT OUT THE DEFENCEMourinho wants to win. But he HATES to lose. And if you don’t concede, you can’t lose. That does not mean “parking the bus” but it does imply Mourinho will look to lock down core principles early on.It was instructive that the only player he name-checked at his introductory press conference was defender Jan Vertonghen, stating that “sadly” the Belgian is not available for the weekend trip to West Ham.Experience at the back is a key for Mourinho, so expect reprieves and returns for Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, despite their ongoing contract stand-offs.But Mourinho wants his full-backs to primarily be defenders too. That appears to spell the end for Serge Aurier, with Juan Foyth likely to get the initial nod.4IDENTIFY HIS CORE PLAYERSMourinho famously had his Chelsea “untouchables” in his first spell at Stamford Bridge and has always liked to create dressing room lieutenants. The social media footage from the training ground Spurs have already put out this week seems instructive.Mourinho has been captured being all over Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Eric Dier. That, straightaway, is an English-orientated spine of players and Dier is the sort of rugged midfield enforcer that has always appealed to the Portuguese.Consistency of selection has always appealed to Mourinho too.It means he is likely to rotate a maximum of two or three players from game to game rather than making Pochettino-style multiple changes.last_img read more

Chelsea asks about Guaita

first_imgThe Crystal Palace wants to renewBetween rumorology, Vicente Guaita remains focused on giving his best version with the Crystal Palace. Finished contract in 2021, but the club has already knocked on his door to try to tie his continuity. In fact, a meeting is expected to be held in the coming dates to talk openly about the possible renewal. It is not for less, since, beyond the great (Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester) and the amazing Sheffield United, there is no Premier League team that has conceded fewer goals than Hodgson’s (28). In fact, you have to subtract four from your personal account, when you miss day 9 before the City (0-2) and the duel against the Arsenal from j.10 (2-2). Despite the bad streak in which the Crystal Palace, remains one of the great revelations of the 2019-20 Premier League. And, in part, it’s thanks to Vicente Guaita, Spanish goalkeeper who is shining with saving stops and has become an idol in Selhurst Park. His performance, without a doubt, is contributing to his team being only four points from European positions after 24 contested days. At 33 years old, he is still growing as a goalkeeper and It has aroused the interest of great clubs in England. Among them, Chelsea. As AS has learned, Christophe Lovichon, scout of goalkeepers of the London club and the confidence of the board, has asked the Guaita environment about its situation and its economic conditions in order to seek its incorporation for next June. Willy Caballero ends the contract and will not continue and, above all, Frank Lampard wants an alternative of guarantees that he fights with Kepa for the position of holder. The current goal of Crystal Palace is an ideal candidate for it, although it will have to mediate negotiation between clubs so that the movement could take place.Chelsea, however, he is not the only major in England who has asked about the situation of Guaita. AS already informed at the end of December that the Manchester City It follows very closely. Like the blues, Guardiola has a staff member with an elite goalkeeper like Ederson Moraes and a veteran that could leave the entity (Claudio Bravo). Therefore, they follow the track of the Spanish goalkeeper who responds to two conditions: having sufficient level to earn the position and a veteran role that can respond to adverse moments. The West Ham also asked, looking forward to next summer.Guaita, in a Crystal Palace match. Statistics recognizes GuaitaThe goalkeeper is the one with the best percentage of stops of the entire Premier, with 74.4% and more than 60 interventions as a guarantee. A fact, at least, revealing, but not the only one. According to advanced statistics, Guaita is also the best of the English championship in the comparison between goals that should have fit with those he has finally received. This study measures the quality of chances of the opponent, accurate shots, positions, relationship with the middle level of other goalkeepers … A complex system that places Guaita with a +6.28. In other words, he receives six goals less than it would be normal for him to fit. No one shadows him. It’s more, Dubravka, Newcastle’s goal, is second in this record with +4.71. From Gea it has a -2.65; Log, a -1.33; Gazzaniga, a -2.88 …Guaita is already fully adapted to the Crystal Palace and the numbers endorse it. It was difficult for him to enter dynamics when he arrived at the club in the summer of 2018-19. It wasn’t until the day 17 when he settled in the post, encountering obstacles such as the early elimination of his team in the third round of EFL Cup. But remained constant in training and assumed the role of holder, which has not been downloaded so far. He has always considered that his style adapts to English football and the Premier League organization also considers it. On days 16 and 17 of the current campaign he was named as ‘Man of the Match’ and was part of the team of the week. More reasons for the greats to notice him. Maybe in summer it is time to decide between the Palace goal or make the leap to a great …last_img read more

Simeone was never out of Champions in the second round

This out of the Champions positions (It is 5th), and that has happened in the eight seasons that has begun, but never exceeded the equator of the League. In the previous seven courses, The team completed all the second laps, from start to finish, in the top four. Now, after the 21st day, it’s time to go back. The numbers therefore confirm the sensations: Atleti lives its worst league moment since the Cholo. To compete for the title and, as a lesser evil, to be assured to finish in the top three – was runner-up of the last two leagues – to consider that he will have to sweat to get into Champions, then the Seville and the Getafe they have passed him and the Real society and the Valencia They stalk two points. And on Saturday, the Atleti visits the Bernabéu. 2015-162nd48fifteen3330822Griezmann (11) In the 2016-17 He spent several days of the first round out of Champions (in the 16th it was sixth), but it closed fourth and finished the third League. At no time did he doubt that he would not finish on the podium. In the 2015-16, his worst place was sixth (after 3 games) and day 7 was the last one that closed out of the Champions League. In the 12th he placed second and from there he did not fall until day 37. In the 2014-15, was installed permanently among the first four on day 10 and finished third. In the 2013-14, that ended the trophy in the mattress cabinets, was all season between the first three; The last ten days as leader. And in the 2012-13 he started ninth (draw against Levante), but on the next day he was already fourth and between 3 and 26 it was second. That is, the classification was always looked at with the peace of mind that getting into the Champions League was a challenge that was taken for granted. At that level, Simeone raised Atlético, that being fourth has been taken for granted. Now, in the transition season, he did not doubt that this goal would be achieved, but right now the numbers send him to the Europa League. There are 17 days left, plenty of time, but the team will have to start scoring goals so as not to get into a mess … Alone on 11-12 he was (always) out of the head quartet, but Cholo started competing in January and with the tenth team. Finished fifth, two points from Malaga and the impression that he only lacked some time to complete the assault on the Champions area. Since that, He had no trouble qualifying Year after year for the highest European competition: 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd and 2nd.Last year, where there were also some doubts in the fall, the last day the team spent outside the Champions League was the ninth, after drawing at Villarreal’s house. It took a week to return and no longer came out, to advance almost the entire second round in second position. Two years ago, on day 4 I was fifth, but he entered a week later and the Christmas break left second, from where he did not come down.last_img read more
